Today we look back at the efforts of yesterday's great explorers with awe, envy and nostalgia. So much was yet to be discovered and their motivation seemed infinitely more worthy. The risk to life and the type of equipment (compared with what we have at our disposal now) makes their achievements all the more amazing. However, it would be a mistake to think that such challenges have all gone; they haven’t - they’re simply different.
Sherpa recognises this and welcomes the fact that exploring is no longer such an exclusive pastime. Happily, this enables them to use the brand to honour the efforts of Sherpa climbers past and present, by supporting the Sherpa families of today. This is happening here and now in a part of the world that still retains its appeal and mystery for the outdoor-minded.
Perhaps the ultimate explorer in UK history was Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the 100th anniversary of his final diary entry was commemorated in a memorial service on Good Friday. The inscription on his memorial in Antarctica is as relevant now as it was then and could inspire the adventurer in all of us “to strive, to seek, to find and not to yield “.
