It’s Half Term in the UK this week and we found ourselves reminiscing about what we used to ‘have’ to wear in the outdoors as kids way back when… Many of you will agree that most challenges a participant endures in “I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here” aren’t a patch on wearing a woollen jumper in the rain with a non-breathable waterproof over the top… It’s amazing how far fabrics have come on in performance outdoor gear and wool in particular.
Patagonia’s Merino Wool base layer breathes, stretches, regulates body temperature and has a great warmth-to-weight ratio. It’s so soft it has to be worn to be believed. Raw, untreated wool has scales that make it itchy, coarse and cause it to shrink, so most wool fabrics are treated with chlorine to reduce the scales. Chlorine is a pervasive pollutant that’s especially harmful to organisms living in water and soil so Patagonia remove the scales from their merino wool fibres using a unique chlorine-free process that’s bluesign approved. Furthermore, their sourcing program is helping to reverse more than 100 years of overgrazing in 15 million acres of South America’s iconic Patagonian grasslands.
